The Avon Education Foundation awarded this Avon Public Library Project in Spring 2016: Avon Reads: Build a 1903 Wright Brothers Glider. When the project was finished in June 2017, a Glider party was held to thank the community members for their time and talents.
In fall 2016, the Avon Free Public Library chose David McCullough's book, The Wright Brothers, as its community read. Over the course of two months, experts in the fields of ornithology, aviation, bicycle history, as well as Dr. Crouch and Dr. Jakab from The Smithsonian, resented lectures at the library. To complement the programs and gallery exhibits on birds, bicycles, and bi-planes, the library wanted to immerse our patrons in the Wright's process by building our very own 1903 glider (flyer!). Generously funded by the Avon Education Foundation, this multi-generational maker project began in November 2016 and concluded in June 2017, with build sessions held on the main floor of the library for everyone to see.
You can read more about the project in the Hartford Courant online article here.
Many unique items were used to build the model glider. The list of these items can be read here.
